THE '27 CLUB
2D Animated Short / 2023
The 27 Club is a short film about a secret concert that takes place in a fictional reality set in the real life location, Rio Cinema. The concept of this film is based on a concert that I attended back in January 2023, where an indie band based in Colombo (Dotdotay) performed before leaving the country. The aim of this project was to bring to life the dilapidated space of the once glorious Rio Cinema and represent it as it is today; a celebration of art, design and music in Sri Lanka.

The main focus of this project was 2D compositing. I used live action footage of the courtyard of Rio Cinema (from back when it was a hotel) which featured a drained out swimming pool and various seating areas. This was where the initial concert I attended took place as well. While 2D animation was the main medium, I also used Blender and After Effects to add in additional elements to the film and further bring to life this world showcased for a mere 30 seconds.
